Mike Bonham is the head trainer at Bonham Stables. He grew up in the hunter/jumper business in a family involved in the equestrian industry for four generations and has ridden for over fifty years. Mike has traveled across the country showing and running sales and client based barns as well as spending time in Europe investing in prospects. He excels in matching riders with a suitable horse to create a successful partnership. Mike is driven and committed to providing students and their mounts with the guidance necessary to bring out their greatest potential. Mike and his students have won hundreds of hunter and jumper championships. Notably he trained his daughter Kels Bonham to a win Reserve Champion at Pony Finals and Champion at the Pessoa USEF Medal Finals in 2008. While in Omaha, NE, Mike continued his success in the business taking students from the children's hunter to the 3'6 junior hunter ring, children's jumpers to regional Grand Prix's and qualifying multiple students for medal finals.
Mike understands what it takes to achieve success in the hunter jumper and equitation rings. He also has his USEF/USHJA Course Design license. Mike has taught clinics in course designing and also has designed courses at many horse shows. His knowledge about courses and how they are judged gives him a unique perspective when training clients and aids to the technique he has when he teaches and prepares each student at home or at the shows.
Mike's training style is focused on accuracy and confidence. Mike has trained beginners to Grand Prix level riders and maintains the same attitude and expectation for all, that they are working their hardest and making safe, accurate decisions. He his committed to teaching each student and working on their individual needs and is willing to help them in every way through demonstrations, in depth explanations and encouragement. His supportive tone allows his students to feel comfortable and confident when training at home or warming up for the show ring. Mike believes that through hard work and determination any rider can be successful.
Lauren McGuire is the assistant trainer and professional rider at Bonham Stables. Lauren grew up in Rochester, New York and began riding at nine years old. Throughout her childhood and teenage years Lauren worked with and rode Thoroughbreds from off the track . When exploring her future career options, her passion for horses and riding lead to her decision of continuing her education at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). In 2015 Lauren graduated from their Equestrian Studies program with a minor in Business Management. While at school, Lauren was an avid competitor on the SCAD IHSA team. In her time on the team Lauren placed third at the 2013 IHSA Nationals as an individual and was on the 2015 ANRC Champion team. Lauren joined Bonham Stables in July of 2015 and has become an integral part of its daily operations. She actively competes, instructs and trains horses; applying everything learned from school and past experiences. Lauren has successfully shown horses in the hunter/jumper/equitation disciplines. She has also participated in clinics throughout the country with well known trainers as she believes continued education is vital for any well rounded horseman.
Lauren excels at training both green horses and riders. Lauren's teaching philosophy stresses importance of the perfecting the basics in order to advance. She teaches with a positive attitude with specific objectives, in order to get the most progress done during each lesson. Riders feel extremely comfortable and confident when training with Lauren because she thoroughly explains the mistakes they make and what the solution is and will always offer praise. Just like Mike, she installs the idea that through hard work and determination any rider can be successful.
